A/B Testing Strategies to Improve Your Social Media Ad Performance

If you feel like your social media ads are underperforming, you’re not alone. The truth is, even well-designed ads don’t always hit the mark on the first try. That’s where A/B testing (also known as split testing) becomes one of the most valuable tools in your digital marketing toolbox.

From a company who manages social campaigns every day, we can tell you firsthand: small tweaks can lead to big results. Below, is what A/B testing looks like in practice and the exact strategies we use to improve social media ad performance for our clients.

What is A/B Testing in Social Media Ads?

A/B testing is the process of comparing two versions of an ad to see which performs better. You change one element at a time (like your image, headline, CTA, or audience) and let the data guide your next move.

Rather than guessing what will work, A/B testing gives you real insights into how your audience responds.

Key Elements to Test in Social Ads

Here are a few components that we regularly test across Facebook, Instagram, and other paid platforms:

  • Visuals: Static images vs. video, or even different styles of photography (lifestyle vs. product-focused).

  • Headlines: Short & punchy vs. detailed. Sometimes all it takes is a 3-word headline to outperform a 10-word one.

  • Ad Copy: Tone of voice (professional vs. playful), pain points highlighted, or benefit-focused language.

  • Calls-to-Action: "Shop Now" vs. "Learn More" vs. "Get Offer."

  • Audience Segments: Testing different age groups, interests, lookalike audiences, or even ad placements.

Best Practices for Running an A/B Test

  1. Test One Variable at a Time Don't test a different image and headline and CTA in one go. That muddies the data. Choose one element to change so you know what’s working.

  2. Use a Large Enough Sample Size Let your test run long enough and to a wide enough audience to get meaningful results. Ending a test after just 20 clicks won’t tell you much.

  3. Stick to Your KPIs Are you trying to lower your cost per click? Boost engagement? Increase conversions? Measure success based on what matters most to your campaign.

  4. Let the Data Do the Talking Avoid picking the winner based on gut instinct. You’d be surprised how often the less "pretty" ad ends up driving more sales.

  5. Apply & Rinse A/B testing isn’t a one-time thing. Use what you’ve learned to optimize future ads and continue the cycle of testing and improvement.

Real-World Example

We recently ran a campaign for a client in the wellness space. Version A of the ad featured a before-and-after image. Version B used a bold, text-forward image with a clear value statement.

Result? The bold version got 41% more clicks and reduced cost per lead by nearly 38%. The change was simple, but the impact was huge.

If you’re spending money on social media ads and not running A/B tests, you’re leaving results on the table. By testing one variable at a time and letting the data guide your decisions, you’ll improve your social media ad performance without increasing your budget.
